I Heart the English Department

My thesis defense was a little nervewracking (especially when W. asked me if I thought I was a better critic or fiction writer), but really pretty easy. It was a conversation with people I like anyway, who "deliberated" for maybe five minutes before deciding that I'd passed. Life is good. Especially since I have beer now.

YAY AMBER!!!!!!!
CONGRATUALTIONS!!!!

I'm glad to hear it went well. So what was your answer to W.? Did you tell him you are a hybrid? Equally talented at both. :) I've always wondered which you prefer.

Good luck printing. You're almost DONE!

I stumbled through my answer pretty gracelessly, I think. I didn't feel comfortable saying that I'm equally talented at both, because I'm not sure that's true. I think the substance of my blabbering was that I thought I was a better critic until I wrote the story that's included in my thesis, and now I'm not sure.

For most of the summer, I'll be staying here in town and working as a hotel desk clerk, but Eric and I are moving to the Twin Cities in August. I'm not really sure what I'll do there. I'd prefer a job that'll give me some sort of experience in my field (though I'm not really sure I want to teach next year), but the important thing is writing. My goal is to present at two conferences (even though--or especially because--it scares the hell out of me), and I'll be submitting critical and fictional writing for publication.

My second most important goal there will be to have fun. We're moving to the Cities because we have a ton of friends and family there, and even more will be moving there soon. Since I don't know where we'll be headed next year, I won't want to waste the opportunity to have as much fun as possible.

It sounds like such a blast. Even the fear of the conference because it is in the good, tingly "I can DO this" way.

Are you going to keep this blog?! (I HOPE!)
